i2Coalition launched a collaborative initiative to help educate consumers about the security benefits of VPNs. The same project aims to help ensure that VPN providers keep their operation at high operational and ethical standards.
Educating the masses
It’s widely accepted that VPNs boost the overall security of many informational systems, such as singular devices or networks. However, not many are aware of the presence of such services, let alone their applicability in day-to-day life.
As a solution to this situation, i2Coalition (Internet Infrastructure Coalition) has prepared to launch the VPN Trust Initiative. This project is lead by a team-up of five VPN business leaders who intend to improve the digital safety of consumers all over the world.
Reportedly, the means of raising awareness will mainly consist of reaching a great level of understanding, consolidating customer trust, as well as mitigating risks for VPN users.
Five power players join the table
As we’ve mentioned above, the VTI (VPN Trust Initiative) was founded and will be lead by five VPN business leaders. Namely, these are ExpressVPN, NordVPN, VyprVPN, Surfshark, and NetProtect. While the first four are well-known for products that carry their very own names, the last one might at least be familiar to you.
The i2Coalition is another powerful component of this equation, as this organization is the leading voice of many branches of the industry. Thus, data centers, web hosting companies, cloud infrastructure providers, domain registrars, and registries, as well as providers for managed services are represented by the same entity: the i2Coalition.
More and more turn to VPN solutions
Lately, the number of those who use VPNs has increased, and it doesn’t show signs of stopping, either. More and more Internet users realize the risks of going online in the open, without anything to shield them from potential hazards, and turn to specialized security solutions.
Apparently, roughly 30% of Internet users have used either a proxy server or a VPN service in the last month. Although it might not seem like much, experts forecast a quick growth of this amount in the following years. In turn, the VPN industry revenue might grow significantly in a short period.
Why the VTI is a necessity
Co-Founder of the i2Coalition Christian Dawson made some comments regarding the importance of having a VPN service you could rely on.
Connecting to a Virtual Private Network helps ensure your activity isn’t being intercepted, especially when you’re using a shared Internet connection. VPNs are a foundational technology for a safer Internet, so it’s important that VPN providers adhere to best practices. However, it’s also important that new legislation doesn’t inadvertently limit the effectiveness of VPNs.
He also made a statement in which he highlighted some of the main objectives of the VPN Trust Initiative while explaining why having such a project in the first place is of vital importance for the safety of Internet users, as well as the efficacy of the Internet.
This initiative offers a vital and unique opportunity for the industry to come together as a collective and spearhead real awareness, education, and progress. In doing so, we not only position our members as stewards of the Internet with active and dedicated interest in the global Internet’s safety and efficacy, we also deliver highly valuable, beneficial, and transformational action as digital security concerns grow and the technological world evolves.
How can VPNs help Internet consumers
Going online head-first, without giving any thought of what happens to your private data while you’re there is unhealthy practice. However, VPNs could turn the tide easily, and with minimum effort. Among other things, VPNs can:
- Prevent unauthorized access to Internet users’ online activities through encryption. Some examples of unauthorized access practitioners are hackers, Wi-Fi network operators, and even ISPs;
- Give users’ privacy a boost by cloaking their IP addresses, thus lowering the chances that certain websites will track them all across the Internet, as well as pinpoint their true, physical locations;
- Unblock various geo-restricted content that would otherwise be unavailable through location spoofing, IP cloaking, and more;
However, it’s not enough for a VPN service to only be able to provide this kind of service to its consumers. They also have to make efforts to follow the best practices and keep the well-being of customers in pristine condition. This, in turn, will also boost customer morale, and strengthen the public trust towards VPN services.
